Ellen Wilkinson Primary School
Targeted Learning Time to Address Underachievement
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Monitoring and data analysis identified inconsistent progress for some pupils who needed additional time/opportunities to embed understanding. Staff shared this concern and felt time restraints were hindering pupil progress.
What actions did you take?
We have implemented a targeted learning approach across the school. This involves each class teacher being released for 1.5 hours a week to work on a 1:1 or small group basis with any child/ren that they are concerned have not understood or embedded the learning from the week. The outcome of this work is then linked to work scrutinies and ultimately pupil progress meetings so we can support and assess the progress needed.
We have found that this approach not only provides the opportunity to address individual’s needs immediately, it also helps us identify any common threads across the work that is taking place, so that we can use this to inform our own self-evaluation and future planning.
What were the outcomes?
Pupil progress in our target groups increased rapidly
- Standard of teaching improved.
- Whole school development more sharply focussed.
