Earlsmead Primary School 2020/21
Overcoming barriers to learning at Earlsmead Primary School
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
- Limited vocabulary affected writing.
- Low self-esteem and motivation identified through negative behaviour for learning.
- Individual barriers such as behaviour, enrichment opportunities and lack of support at home.
What actions did you take?
EAL pupils and families workshops and learning together sessions. Targeted bespoke CPD sessions were designed to provide staff with new skills or knowledge to take away and implement in the classroom. The curriculum was redesigned to build in opportunities for spaced retrieval practice, formative low-stakes testing and plenty of repeated practice for automaticity and fluency. To address the low standards in in reading, we implemented whole class guided reading sessions which proved to be successful in raising the standards and progress in reading. Comprehension is taught using the VIPERS approach which equips children with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand what they have read.
What were the outcomes?
The school is on an upward trend across the board achieving above national standards.
