Cubitt Town Junior School 2020/21

Building an oracy based curriculum

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Having embedded oracy across our curriculum at Cubitt Town Juniors we wished to share our expertise and disseminate best practice across the borough

What actions did you take?

Over the past 18 months we have hosted groups of teachers from across London and further afield, providing an opportunity to witness oracy teaching and learning in practice. In addition to training sessions, visitors were invited to observe lessons and oracy assemblies and talk with pupils and staff about the changes we've made to our curriculum. Furthermore, we helped to create the Tower Hamlets Oracy Hub as a space for developing oracy teaching practice. Made up of 25 school and over 40 teachers, we meet termly for training sessions and to share ideas and resources. We also recently published a pack of oracy lesson plans for teachers returning to school after lockdown which has been accessed by hundreds of schools.

What were the outcomes?

With our support alongside the expertise of our hub, high quality oracy lessons are being taught in schools throughout the borough.
