Develop confidence & growth mind set approach in disadvantaged pupils
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Our staff recognised that disadvantaged children were not achieving in line with our other pupils in core areas.
What actions did you take?
-Provided an inspirational mentor to develop a positive relationship with the children concerned and instil a growth mind set approach, that supported learning. The mentor took time to get to know children and their interests.
-Supported them in small groups led by a teacher, until they were confident and achieved well enough to return to class.
-Implemented a Singapore style intervention approach so that gaps in learning were filled quickly.
-Implemented a split input teaching approach in class, which supported faster progress.
-Teaching assistants pick up the disadvantaged children for extra 1:1 reading on a daily basis.
-Having a link between Teaching Assistants and Play leaders, so that the growth mind set approach can be reinforced on the playground.
What were the outcomes?
Disadvantaged children are now achieving significantly above national and are in line with our other children at expected levels.
