Strengthened leadership and empowered pupils

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

  • Low attainment on entry
  • Many pupils new to English
  • High percentage of new arrivals with unidentified special educational needs

What actions did you take?

  • Assessment on entry.
  • Early identification of SEND
  • SEND focus for CPD
  • Expert team focused on supporting pupils new to English.
  • Whole school focus on writing - audit of need; scrutiny of work; targeted CPD; close monitoring and evaluation of the teaching and learning of writing.
  • Developing a love of reading throughout the school through CPD; introduction of Reciprocal Reading; increased focused on guided reading; and improving core books.

What were the outcomes?

Improved reading and improved writing; EAL pupils catching up with their peers; pupils with SEND achieving their targets.
