City of London Academy Islington
Improving attainment and progress for disadvantaged pupils
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
The Academy recognised through data analysis that disadvantaged pupils faced significant barriers to learning in comparison to their peers, and were underachieving in terms of attainment and progress.
What actions did you take?
Across the whole school we fostered a culture of excellence for all. We set aspirational targets for all students and discussed progress regularly with students and their parents.
Through our sponsors - The Corporation of London and City University - we engaged in widening participation programmes that included: academic support of targeted students in Year 9 in Mathematics; residential weekends for Year 11 pre-GCSE exams; and career workshops with the lower sixth.
In Year 11 we increased the allocation of English and Maths curriculum time and supported this additional learning with targeted after-school intervention programmes, mentoring programmes with partner agencies, revision weekends, additional subject specific tutoring and a teacher-pupil mentoring programme.
What were the outcomes?
53% of our disadvantaged students achieved 5A*-C EM in 2016, compared to a national average of 36%.
