Improving the progress of low achieving children in Maths

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We recognised that low achieving children lacked confidence and engagement with maths, and this was impacting on the progress they were making.

What actions did you take?

We planned a staff INSET on teaching key maths skills through games to increase the profile and enjoyment of maths. These were then put into lessons regularly and had a positive impact on the enjoyment of all pupils and staff.

Then we looked at our overview for maths planning and chose to rearrange this to allow for much longer periods of time on each concept. This allowed children to become much more confident in a concept before moving on.

Following this success, we began to look at deeper thinking problem solving activities. This involved a day where all children and staff dressed as a superhero and took part in a range of activities where they could use superhero problem solving skills.

What were the outcomes?

Engagement in maths was up across the school, and this had an impact on the progress of all children.
