Engaging children and families in raising aspirations

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Pupils:

-Lacked experience and were unwilling to take risks

- Had low aspirations

-Had weak speech and language skills

-Had poor social skills

-Lacked home engagement

-Had high levels of absence

These were Identified through observation and interactions with families

What actions did you take?

-Created a broad curriculum and embedded basic skills (literacy and numeracy) into it

-Got pupils to monitor enjoyment of the curriculum

-Created a range of Secret Clubs that targeted pupils are invited to

-Created a family liaison officer for parents

-Developed a range of targeted interventions

-Developed lots of non-threatening ways for parents to come into school, then moved this onto workshops and information sessions

-Created a mental health curriculum to help deal with pressures

-Developed opportunities to find out more about the world of work and started planning their pathways

-Made it explicit to parents what age related expectations look like

-Developed a learning to learn curriculum, MAGIC Habits

- Developed a social skills curriculum, PRIDE

What were the outcomes?
