Brettenham Primary School

Accelerate progress of disadvantaged children and children with EAL

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Assessments showed that disadvantaged children and children with EAL were lower attainers by the end of Key Stage 1. Accelerated progress was needed to diminish differences by the end of KS2.

What actions did you take?

-Our whole school approach and ethos to high quality PE and School Sport, extra-curricular activities and a creative curriculum ensures that children are keen to come to school and are fully engaged in all aspects of their learning.

-A structured approach to high quality teaching and interventions ensures that children are targeted throughout the school and given personalised learning interventions to meet their specific needs.

-Parents are encouraged to support their children through a number of practical workshops.

-An increase in the number of speaking and listening activities has been used to widen the vocabulary of children with English as an additional language.

What were the outcomes?

The attainment and progress by the end of Key Stage 2 was well above the national average.
