Berkeley Academy 2018/19
High aspirations for every pupil, focus on vocabulary
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Used assessment data/gap analysis – identified a lack of exposure to rich vocabulary as an improvement focus – particularly for EAL and white British pupils.
What actions did you take?
- Consistency across the school and clear systems for evidence and impact, such as frequent pupil progress discussions, whole staff INSET, etc.
- Used analysis from close data scrutiny to complete gap analyses and used this information to plan for groups and individuals, this included interventions which took place outside English and maths lessons
- Identified groups and individuals for Short Impact Targets in English and maths - intervention to be carried out on the day/before the next lesson, to reduce a widening gap between pupils
- Ensured that all pupils were being exposed to classic novels and 'unpicking' vocabulary regularly
- Vocabulary displayed in every classroom
- Rephrased instructions and everyday terms to improve and expand vocabulary
What were the outcomes?
Progress/attainment at the end of each Key Stage (EYFS, KS1 and KS2) was above National Average in all areas.
