Primary/Secondary Language Development Project
Expert teachers from Twyford CoE Academies Trust and Edward Betham CoE Primary School provided French and Latin CPD to 50 teachers in 8 primary schools to help develop pupils’ basic and higher order thinking before they reached secondary school.
Training and resources were delivered to teachers every 6 weeks, in advance of the term when they would be teaching them. Resources were produced to help teachers with no knowledge of French to use the ‘target language only’ rule in the classroom. In the second year of the project the Canadian immersive AIM methodology of teaching language through the use of a familiar story was introduced, for example, “Les trois petits cochons”. Twyford’s Head of Specialist Language College delivered Latin language training, with the Director from the University of Cambridge Schools Classic Project (CSCP) delivering the language and civilisation side of the training to teachers.
Teachers increased their subject knowledge and confidence in teaching French and Latin. Survey and assessment evidence suggests that pupils benefitting from the programme had a better transition to secondary school than the comparison group.
...[in] Latin [you] learn lots of history stories [and] fascinating facts [and] words that are similar to English. Latin is great Latin’s fun, have a go, it is a treat learning Latin!
Twyford C of E Academies Trust was awarded further funding through the Subject Knowledge Hubs programme.
