Primary Advantage Federation
Equipping teachers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to transform aspirations for all pupils in maths
Primary Advantage Maths Programme
The project addressed underachievement and gaps in attainment aligned to differences in gender, Pupil Premium (PP) eligibility and EAL status. It aimed to enable good progress throughout early years, KS1 and KS2 for all pupils by developing firm foundations in the understanding of key mathematical concepts. The project also aimed to increase the percentage of pupils achieving age-expected levels in maths.
The project delivered a comprehensive CPD package, promoting best practice in maths teaching and learning, alongside curriculum guidance. It enhanced teachers’ subject knowledge by equipping them with a deep, conceptual understanding in all areas of mathematics, enabling them to support all pupils to reach their full potential.
Teachers identified as ‘Maths Ambassadors’ underwent in-depth subject knowledge training, alongside coaching sessions to improve the practice of Primary Advantage Federation teachers. Within their schools, they collaborated with colleagues to positively impact on pupils’ engagement and outcomes.
At project end the attainment gap had been reduced in two out of three categories at both level 2 and 3.
The use of concrete resources and the use of bar models to develop pictorial understanding is now helping to bridge the gap between concept, language and procedure. Children see maths as fun.
