Prehistory in the Primary Classroom

The Museum of London worked with teaching alliances to offer primary teachers specialist training in teaching prehistory.

Prehistory in the Primary Classroom

The project aimed to increase primary teachers' subject knowledge, confidence and understanding in pre-history, chronology and object handling, in response to changes in the National Curriculum. A training programme was designed to support teachers that combined expert curatorial knowledge with sound pedagogical practice. The Museum also supported a number of smaller museums to develop similar prehistory programmes for schools.

Findings from teacher self-assessments before and after training evaluations suggest that the prehistory CPD sessions at the Museum achieved an overall increase in teacher confidence in all areas.
