Training science, history and geography teachers to teach Academic English skills to improve the writing of essay answers.

Academic English

The project trained science, history and geography teachers to teach Academic English skills in their specialist subjects so that advanced bilingual learners, and non-standard English pupils, were able to write essays capable of achieving the highest grades at A-Level and GCSE.

Literacy experts coached science and humanities teachers using a cycle of plan-teach-review to coach grammar and learn how to teach writing skills in subject lessons. This focused on creating lesson activities to improve students’ written answers for particular topics on the syllabus.

A compilation of resources to support teaching Academic English in a range of subject lessons entitled, ‘Writing it Right’ was produced by the project’s lead literacy consultant.

More information can be found in the project’s self-evaluation report.
