Improving teaching and learning in GCSE and A-level mathematics

A range of professional development courses for teachers of GCSE and A level Mathematics.

Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI)

MEI had two main aims in this project: to support teachers of GCSE and A level Mathematics in developing their subject knowledge and pedagogical skills, and to share its expertise with local lead teachers, developing them as leaders of this professional development. There were seven sub-projects, each with a different focus, which varied from single-day courses to extensive six-day, year-long courses. These focused on teachers’ subject knowledge, developing pupils’ problem solving skills, transition from GCSE to A level, and embedding the use of ICT in mathematics teaching.

The project evaluation demonstrated considerable transfer of knowledge to participating teachers and growth in their mathematical confidence, and that the lead teachers gained an understanding of how to design and lead PD.

The lead teachers are in a position to continue to offer the courses in London and participating teachers have on-going access to the on-line resources.

I have learnt a huge amount about delivering CPD and have managed to deliver an entire day on my own, something I would never have considered a year ago.

Excellent resources, great atmosphere, lots of learning. Really enjoyed it.
