Developing Teachers’ Mathematics Subject Knowledge In Primary Schools

London Borough Haringey, with NRICH, strengthened mathematical CPD through leading classroom based, peer-led teacher collaboration.

Classroom based, peer-led teacher collaboration

The project aimed to develop the participating teachers' mathematics subject knowledge (MSK) and mathematical pedagogic knowledge (MPK) in order to:

  1. improve curriculum design and delivery through the use of effective resources and approaches to learning and teaching,
  2. improve pupil attainment and progress,
  3. improve confidence by strengthening professional development through leading classroom based, peer-led collaboration within and between schools,
  4. share project outcomes with the wider community in Haringey as part of a process of continued development.

The project was run in partnership with NRICH, University of Cambridge and was delivered to 65 teachers in 36 schools. Combining subject knowledge with task design and task presentation proved to be very effective. Both qualitative and quantitative data indicated that the project had positive impact on teachers, pupils, leadership teams and the wider school community. A conference was held to celebrate the successes of the project and to look forwards to an up-scaled continuation of the project with a focus on leadership of primary mathematics.
