Raising attainment in primary Literacy and Maths.
The project used Lesson Study, Teacher Learning Communities and Peer Enquiry to improve teachers' subject knowledge at primary school level, in Literacy and Mathematics, in order to raise achievement.
55 primary schools, 4 nursery schools and 1 special school formed thirteen teacher learning communities (TLCs) across Barnet. The project was launched with a two day residential attended by either the maths or literacy lead, depending on school priorities. Headteachers joined the residential at its beginning and its end, as did representatives from 7 secondary schools. Thirteen TLCs were established by the end of the conference and an action plan for each TLC written. In the second year of the project each school carried out a peer enquiry with one or two other schools in their TLC.
Teacher subject and pedagogical knowledge showed an increase (literacy 83-91% correct and mathematics 60-68% correct) over the time of the project, as measured by in-house surveys.
Pupils at participating schools increased their attainment across all subjects/aspects. This attainment was better than Barnet schools that did not participate in the project.
It has been a good opportunity to put maths back into focus and to really narrow in on what needs to be improved. The lesson study was an excellent tool to generate open discussions and the children really benefitted.
