Accelerating Mandarin Chinese for London Schools

The Confucius Institute increased the number and expertise of teachers delivering Mandarin Chinese teaching in London.

The project aimed to improve subject and pedagogical knowledge in teaching of Mandarin Chinese, giving more London pupils the opportunity to learn the language by delivering a mixture of face-to-face training and training via the Masterclass model. The project was delivered to 93 teachers in 72 schools. Findings demonstrated improved subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge according to teachers' self-evaluation. 98% of teachers reported that they had acquired new ideas and practice as a result of the training. This was an increase from 82% of teachers who reported that their teaching ideas and practice were already adequate prior to the training taking place. 95.1% of teachers Strongly Agreed or Agreed that their confidence had been increased.
