Understanding Science Through Art

Pump House Gallery engaged artists, scientists and teachers to develop resources for primary science topics.

The project aimed to upskill teachers and provide entry points for learning into the new primary science curriculum topics of light, sound and forces/magnets by creating an exhibition, which was complemented by dynamic and collaborative school resources and an action learning programme. The project involved 6 key project teachers and reached an additional 38 teachers and 290 pupil through work in schools and visitors to the exhibition. Findings suggest that engaging in cross-disciplinary discussions leading to the creation of the exhibition and teachers' resource pack has led to a greater understanding of the new curriculum concepts for participating teachers and greater confidence in designing learning activities. It was not possible to collect data to evidence the increased attainment and progress in science in years 3 and 4, due to changes in the National Curriculum and testing arrangements..

It has made me think more carefully and reflect on how I can teach science in a more cross curricular way, looking for opportunities to teach science in different ways.
