Train to teach English (ESOL)
What is ESOL?
In the UK, ‘ESOL’ (English for Speakers of Other Languages) refers to English courses for adults learning English as a second or additional language. Courses range from beginner to advanced levels and help people improve their English for work, study, and daily life.
London is known for its diversity, with over 300 languages spoken in the city. Approximately one-third of Londoners were born outside the UK and one in five hold a non-UK passport. While most speak English fluently, the 2021 Census showed that among those who do not speak English as a main language:
- 303,000 Londoners reported that they cannot speak English well
- around 52,000 said they cannot speak English at all.
These figures do not include recent arrivals from Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Ukraine, or anyone who came to the UK after the 2021 Census.
English proficiency helps people gain independence, confidence, and better access to healthcare, education, and job opportunities. It also helps people build connections across communities, reducing isolation and loneliness.

The ESOL sector in London is diverse, with a range of providers and teaching opportunities. ESOL jobs can be flexible and suited to people with different life commitments.
Job roles vary by:
- contract type – full-time, part-time, seasonal / hourly paid, permanent, or fixed-term
- teaching hours – daytime (within school hours), evenings, or weekends
- work settings – most jobs are in-person during the school term, with some positions being available over the summer and online.
Qualifications and Entry Requirements
Not all ESOL providers require specific qualifications, but in the formal ESOL sector, the Level 5 Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is the most widely recognised entry-level qualification in London.
To be eligible to apply for a CELTA, you need:
- English proficiency at a high C1 (CEFR level)
- or 7.5 (IELTS equivalent).
Guidance is available to check your English level, explore CELTA courses, understand pay and job expectations in the formal and informal sectors, and get tips on preparing for the CELTA interview and course. You can also find out about how to become a CELTA Trainer.
Find a London CELTA provider
There are a number of CELTA providers in London. You can find your most local CELTA provider using the CELTA provider Map on the Cambridge English website. Courses may be part-time, intensive or online. CELTA courses are not currently free in London and the cost varies by the provider. Some providers offer Advanced Learner Loans which can help fund part of the total cost of the course.
Listed below are CELTA providers which also receive funding from the Mayor of London through the Adult Skills Fund (ASF), which is the main source of funding for Adult (19+) education, including ESOL.

Subscribe to ESOL jobs and volunteering bulletin
The GLA's ESOL Jobs and Volunteering Bulletin connects those who would like to work in the ESOL sector to ESOL job vacancies. Bulletins are shared as and when vacancies arise, usually weekly.
The bulletins include positions for those at any stage of their ESOL career – from those with no experience of ESOL teaching, to those who are looking to move into a management or teacher training position.
The bulletin includes ESOL vacancies from both the formal and informal ESOL sector, such as:
- paid and voluntary roles
- full time, part time, seasonal, fixed term and permanent positions
- day time, school time, weekend and evening positions.
Although most positions require an ESOL teaching qualification, or a commitment to complete one within a time-frame, some do not.
