Free and discounted travel

Transport for London (TfL) provides a wide range of concessions offering free and discounted travel on its network. Further details can be found below.

Children aged under five can travel free at any time on all TfL services (buses, Tube, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail) as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a validated Oyster/contactless card or a valid ticket.

No child ticket is required.

This photocard gives children aged five to ten:

  • free travel on bus, Tube, tram DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services.

A parent or guardian must apply for a photocard online via TfL's website. To apply online you will need to provide details from your child’s passport. If you can't provide this, follow the instructions online.

You'll need to go to a Post Office to complete your application. You'll need proof of your child's age and identity and to pay the £10 administration fee or another form of documentation such as biometric residence permit.

Children aged between five to ten can travel free on all buses and trams without a photocard.

Up to four children aged between five to ten can travel free on Tube, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail services without a Zip photocard as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.

This photocard gives children aged 11-15:

  • free travel on buses and trams
  • child rate pay as you go fares on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and the Emirates Air Line.

50 per cent off most fares on National Rail services.

A parent or guardian must apply for a photocard online via TfL's website. To apply online you will need to provide details from your child’s passport. If you can't provide this, follow the instructions online.

You'll need to go to a Post Office to complete your application. You'll need proof of your child's age and identity and to pay the £15 administration fee or another form of documentation such as biometric residence permit.

This photocard gives children aged 16 and 17:

  • free travel on buses and trams
  • 50 per cent off adult pay as you go fares Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services in London.

A parent or guardian must apply for a photocard online via TfL's website. To apply online you will need to provide details from your child’s passport. If you can't provide this, follow the instructions online.

You'll need to go to a Post Office to complete your application. You'll need proof of your child's age and identity and to pay the £20 administration fee or another form of documentation such as biometric residence permit.

If you’re claiming certain benefits and aged 18-60 you may be eligible for this concession which offers:

  • 50 per cent off adult pay as you go bus and tram fares
  • 50 per cent off Adult 7 Day or monthly (up to six months).

To apply for this discount you will need to print off an application form which you can find online or get one from participating London Post Offices and London Jobcentre Plus offices.

If you’re unemployed and looking for work then you may be eligible to this photocard which gives:

  • 50 per cent off pay as you go adult fares on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services in London.

You need to go to your local Jobcentre Plus office to apply. Further details on how to contact Jobcentre Plus can be found on gov.uk.

This photocard gives those aged 60 or over living in a London borough:

  • free travel on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail (excluding between West Drayton and Reading) and most National Rail services in London.

You can apply for a 60+ London Oyster photocard from two weeks before your 60th birthday via TfL's website. You will need to provide:

  • active email address
  • details from your valid, machine-readable passport or your valid UK driving license (full or provisional)
  • a colour image of your valid, machine-readable passport
  • digital photo of you which must be a .jpg, .bmp or .gif file and be less than 6MB
  • debit or credit card registered at your address to confirm you live in a London borough and pay £20.

If you don't have the above, you can still apply online but you will need to:

  • print a verification letter and take it to a Post Office in London with proof of your age and address
  • pay £20 at a Post Office.

This photocard gives people aged 66 or over or who have a disability:

  • free travel on bus, tram, Tube, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail.

You will need to apply for a Freedom Pass through London Councils. You can visit their website to apply.
