Employing migrant workers

Last updated: 22 February 2024

Migrant workers have the same employment rights and entitlements as British workers. When employing any worker, an employer is obligated by law to ensure that the worker has the legal right to work. This is the case for all employees; an employer must not discriminate by only asking some employees to provide proof of their entitlement to work. If you employ someone who is not entitled to work, you can face serious sanctions.

For more information on employing migrant workers visit our Information for employers in the Employment Rights Hub. Migrants’ Rights Network has also produced advice for employers.
