The UK left the European Union (EU) at 11pm on 31 January 2020 under a negotiated deal called the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement. The Withdrawal Agreement provided for an extension of all EU law until 31 December 2020 in order to give the UK time to negotiate itself properly out of the EU.

The Withdrawal Agreement also included a provision on citizens’ rights, how to secure lawful residence, and what rights and entitlements are protected if a person satisfies the conditions of the agreement.

On 30 December 2020, parliament accepted a post-Brexit trade deal agreed between the UK and the EU. The transition period during which the UK has been able to continue to access the Single Market and Customs Union ended at 11pm on 31 December 2020.
