A summary report setting out the vision of the Water for Schools’ programme to explore and deliver exemplary sustainable water management schemes across London schools has been published.
The report and accompanying case example explains the delivery approach, which included whole school engagement, educational awareness-raising, and physical interventions such as improved metering to provide schools with robust data, repairs and water efficiency installations.
In-school education and awareness activities worked across the range of school community members (teachers, students and support staff) and involved the production of freely available, innovative engagement support material. Engagement activities also encouraged school community members to explore career opportunities within the environmental and water sectors, thereby linking all parts of the water environment.
Supporting objectives included establishing a behavioural change programme, mobilising schools as water efficiency advocates, saving money for schools through water efficiency measures, delivering a widely available learning programme and establishing a legacy programme for London’s schools.
Water for Schools is a GLA initiative working in partnership with Thames Water, the Environment Agency and the London Sustainable Schools Forum.
