The cladding crisis in London – how will it be resolved?

City Hall
Created on
12 October 2020

Londoners living in leasehold homes are finding themselves unable to move or remortgage due to the unavailability of an external wall fire review form (EWS1), without which mortgage lenders won’t release financing. The responsibility for getting these reviews done sits with freeholders.

The London Assembly recently wrote to the Mayor of London on what he can do to better support Londoners who are stuck in this situation.

Tomorrow, the Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will hear from Londoners who are impacted by the cladding crisis, obtaining External Wall Fire Review (EWS1) forms and remediation work.

The Committee will then discuss the progress of remediation programmes in London, Government legislation on fire and building safety, and London Fire Brigade’s progress on delivering new training on tackling fires in high-rise residential buildings.

The guests are:

Panel 1: London tenants and leaseholders

Panel 2: Remediation progress and EWS1 forms

  • Megan Life, Head of Building Safety, Housing and Land, GLA
  • Gary Strong, Fire Safety Lead, RICS
  • John Baguley, Tangible Assets Valuation Director, RICS
  • Andy Roe, London Fire Commissioner, LFB

Panel 3: High rise firefighting and fire safety

  • Andy Roe, London Fire Commissioner, LFB
  • Sue Budden, Director of Corporate Services, LFB
  • Susan Ellison-Bunce, Assistant Director, Strategy and Risk, LFB
  • Andy Bell, Assistant Commissioner, Grenfell Team, LFB
  • Paul Jennings, Assistant Commissioner, Fire Safety, LFB
  • David Shek, London Fire Brigades Union
  • Matt Wrack, General Secretary, Fire Brigades Union

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 13 October 2020 from 10.00am. In line with Government advice, this meeting will take place in a hybrid format, it will take place virtually, but with some Members in attendance.

Media and members of the public can watch the meeting live here.
