London’s power struggle

Devolution Working Group
Created on
12 July 2022

As part of the Government’s levelling-up agenda, should London have more control of its finances? And should the London Assembly have more powers to hold the Mayor to account?

On June 16th the GLA Oversight Committee considered the Levelling Up White Paper and Bill and its potential impact on devolution in London and on London more broadly.

Tomorrow, the Committee will consider further opportunities for London devolution, in particular fiscal devolution relating to business rates, council tax and land value.

This session will also explore how the role of the London Assembly could be strengthened for the benefit of London government and Londoners.

The guests are:

  • Professor Tony Travers - Director of LSE London
  • Claire Harding - Research Director, Centre for London
  • Akash Paun - Senior Fellow, Institute for Government
  • Jeremy Skinner – Assistant Director City Intelligence, GLA
  • Enver Enver – Assistant Director Group Finance and Performance, GLA
  • Vicky Hobart, GLA Group Director of Public Health

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 13 July from 2.00pm, in The Chamber, City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
