
London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe announced a review of the London Fire Brigade’s culture in March 2021. It came after the tragic death of firefighter Jaden Francois-Esprit, who was only 21 when he took his own life in August 2020.
Employees from an African, Caribbean, and Asian background, and those with English as a second language, are less likely to be promoted in the London Fire Brigade (LFB) [1].
Meanwhile, around two-thirds of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender LFB colleagues have reported that they do not feel comfortable disclosing their identity at work.
The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the culture review. Other topics in the session include:
- Staffing – including numbers, recruitment and retention
- LFB Performance – including response times, fire safety assessments, and staff qualified to drive fire appliances
- High-rise firefighting – including the new 64 metre aerial platforms
The guests are:

- Fiona Dolman, Director for Transformation, London Fire Brigade
- Tim Powell, Director of People, London Fire Brigade
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 30 November 2021 from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
