The Mayor of London has said that the Greater London Authority (GLA), which is responsible for the Met Police, London Fire Brigade and TfL, is facing a budget shortfall of up to £493 million over the next two years. The Mayor’s overall budget for 2020-21 is £18.5 billion.

The London Assembly is starting a budget review process to understand how this budget shortfall will impact vital services for Londoners. The Met Police and London Fire Brigade are up first.

The London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will tomorrow question the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, the Met and the London Fire Brigade on the impact of COVID-19 on their finances.

Questions around the Met’s £30.3 million overspend on police officer pay and overtime in 2019-20, the London Fire Brigade’s £6.3 million underspend for 2019-20 and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime’s £19.1 million overspend forecast for 2020-21 will be asked.
