The Mayor revealed today that new work is underway to make his “Zero Carbon London: A 1.5C compatible plan” [1] achieve its aims by 2030, rather than by 2050. Under scrutiny from Caroline Russell AM at Mayor’s Question Time, he admitted: “we can do the work in relation to what’s needed by 2030, and that work is taking place.” [2]
Caroline Russell says:
“The IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming [3] warned we only have until 2030 before global temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 1.5C, resulting in irreversible climate change. I welcome today’s response by the Mayor, coming after he reacted quickly to my London Assembly motion calling on him to declare a climate emergency, that he is bringing forward his carbon reduction targets. The science makes it crystal clear that London must be carbon neutral by 2030 to protect people from catastrophic climate breakdown.
“I call on Mayor Khan to produce his updated report on ensuring the capital is carbon neutral by 2030 as swiftly as possible.”
