The Mayor announced this morning that the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group is facing a budget shortfall of up to £493m over the next two years.
The GLA Group comprise of the GLA, the Mayor's Office of Policing & Crime, the Metropolitan Police Service, Transport for London, the London Fire Brigade, the London Legacy Development Corporation, and Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation.
Susan Hall AM, Chairman of the Budget and Performance Committee said:
“COVID-19 has brought financial challenges to local authorities in London and across the country. The GLA will not be the only local authority to experience shortfalls over the coming months and years ahead.
“The Mayor and the GLA is the London Assembly’s concern. It is the job of the Assembly to investigate the Mayor and the GLA Group and that is what the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will focus on. The Mayor is due to appear before the Committee on 7 July, and questions will be put to him about this announcement.
“Over the next few months, as decisions on potential cuts are made, the Assembly will ensure that the right questions are put to the Mayor. The GLA has a sizeable budget and the Mayor needs to ensure that funds are kept in place for the services that Londoners rely on. The Mayor needs to be held to account on the decisions that will need to be made and that’s exactly what the London Assembly will do.”
