English: the key to integration in London
English: the key to integration in London provides support to both non-EU pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL), and to non-EU EAL mothers.
What was the programme’s aim?
The programme was launched in October 2013 with two main objectives:
- to improve the quality of teaching provision for non-EU EAL pupils in primary and secondary schools
- to improve the English skills of non-EU EAL mothers to encourage their involvement in the school community.
Who received funding?
We awarded funding to 13 lead partners. This included schools, social enterprises and London boroughs.
Throughout the programme, these partners:
- worked successfully with 85 schools across 14 London boroughs
- provided EAL training to 733 teachers
- improved the English language skills of more than 900 non-EU EAL mothers.
For more information please see the summary sheet of the individual projects and the case studies below.
What did the programme achieve?
Participants learnt a number of good practices as a result of the programme. These included:
- developing and sharing teaching resources
- continuous professional development of teaching staff
- identifying other funding sources
- viewing parts of their projects as integral to their core business.
To celebrate the programme’s success, we hosted an event at City Hall in June 2015 for over 100 guests. The event demonstrated beneficiaries’ achievements through presentations and market stalls. It also provided an excellent opportunity for networking and inspired future projects and collaboration.
Who funded and managed the programme?
The £2 million programme received £500,000 from the LSEF and £1.5m from the European Integration Fund (EIF), administered by the Home Office. The EIF funding was awarded under Strategic Priority 3 (capacity building and dissemination) which supports the integration of non–EU nationals in member states.
The programme was launched as part of the London Schools Excellence Fund and managed by the GLA Delivery Unit.
