Relationships

Relationships is; exploring relationships particularly relationships with immediate and extended family. You will hear about the importance of family to Londoners and the ways people choose to spend time with loved ones. You will hear about the language people use with each other and how this creates and highlights a deeper sense of connection between different communities. It explores how these different communities are united by their experiences of London life.

Facilitator: Joanna Sawkins is studying for a PhD the areas of community research and public policy. Her work is supported by the GLA and University College London.

Goldsmiths University were a partner with the London Community Story at the collecting phase, hosting the Conversation Booth. This partnership developed into the interpreting stage and following an open call, 6 filmmakers were selected to represent each theme, using solely the audio collected.

The everyday relationships we form in the London give us a sense of belonging, even if the city can sometimes feel like a lonely place. Some connections are fleeting, coalescing at rallies or where Londoners come together with a sense of common purpose.

Shot on a retro camcorder reminiscent of 90s home video, this film captures encounters on the streets of London and the everyday gestures that underpin our relationships with each other and the city.

Moving into a new city can be a challenging experience. Living away from home and loved ones can prove to be quite unsettling. New friendships and relationships are what can keep a person going. Exploring the topic further, this essay lets the reader peek into the writer’s first-hand interactions with the people of London city in her first few days here. Focusing on the concept of finding a home away from home, it talks about how friends can become family and the importance of these relationships when living in a new environment.

Shama Nimkar has worked as a Lifestyle Journalist in India over the past two years. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Arts and Lifestyle Journalism at London College of Communication.
