Grinling Gibbons Primary School, London Borough of Lewisham

Students from Grinling Gibbons Primary School in the London Borough of Lewisham recently took part in a Team London Young Ambassadors assembly. The young volunteers explored the importance of values, community spirit and why we should care for one another and our surroundings.

With a wide range of volunteering and fundraising activities, Grinling Gibbons prides itself on being an integral part of the local community. A key part of this is the long-term relationship is has fostered with a local care home. Every month, young volunteers take it in turns to visit the residents and share their skills with them, often through music, technology and acting.

At Christmas, the students performed carols at the care home. Prepared with a range of instruments, the pupils delighted the residents with their uplifting songs.

As a reward for their volunteering efforts, twelve pupils earned their way to WE Day UK 2016. The event brings together world-renowned speakers and artists with tens of thousands of young people to celebrate their contributions and kick start another year of change.

Grinling Gibbons exemplify what it means to be at the heart of the local community.

Team London Young Ambassadors, the Mayor's volunteer programme for schools, inspires young people to engage in social action, both in their school and the local community. The programme is made possible thanks to the support from Spirit of 2012 and Unilever and is delivered by WE Day, as part of their WE Schools programme.
