The Mayor's Budget - A Fiscal Christmas

Key information

Publication type: General

Publication date:

Christmas is a time of generosity and goodwill.

But it also heralds budget season for the Greater London Authority (GLA) – a time traditionally associated with belt-tightening and money worries.

The Mayor’s draft budget for 2019-2020 provides a clue to his future priorities – and shows where services important to Londoner’s may come under financial pressure.

For the next 12 days we’ll be revealing key statistics that indicate the Mayor’s plans for organisations that keep London safe and functioning – such as police, fire and transport.

The London Assembly will publish its verdict on the GLA Budget at the end of February – and it has the power to amend the draft budget if a majority of two-thirds agree.

Budget in the spotlight

The Budget & Performance Committee will quiz officials on the impact of the Mayor’s draft budget.

On December 11, the budgets of the Met Police and London Fire Brigade come under scrutiny.

On December 12, it is the turn of the Mayoral Development Corporations covering the Olympic Park and Old Oak and Park Royal.

On December 17, Members will investigate TfL, examining the impact of fare freezes and the Crossrail delay.

On December 20, the Mayor himself comes before the full London Assembly to answer questions on his current and future priorities.
