The Metropolitan Police Service’s (Met) recent PEEL assessment concluded that it is failing in almost all its areas of work.
Concerns were raised about how the Met investigates crime, manages offenders and suspects, and how it prevents and reduces crime.
The London Assembly has today agreed a motion expressing its concerns over the outcome of the assessment.
It is calling on the Mayor as London’s Police and Crime Commissioner to set out in detail how he intends to improve the Met’s performance in response to this assessment and restore Londoner’s confidence in their police service.
Susan Hall AM, who proposed the motion, said:
"The latest PEEL assessment highlighted shocking failings within the Metropolitan Police Service. Even the most critical areas like “investigating crime” were rated as ‘Inadequate,’ eroding the confidence Londoners should have in their police.
“While I am glad that positive strides have been made in the use of stop and search, the overall report makes it clear that urgent action is needed.
“I call on the Mayor to take immediate, decisive steps to address these failings and restore trust in our police service."
The full text of the motion is:
This Assembly wishes to express its concern regarding the outcome of the Metropolitan Police Service’s latest PEEL assessment, conducted by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
The Inspectorate concluded that the Met is failing in almost all its areas of work, with zero of the nine areas assessed rated as ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’. Many Londoners will be particularly concerned that investigating crime and managing offenders were rated as ‘Inadequate’, the lowest possible rating.
This Assembly wishes to note HM Inspector’s “serious concerns about how the force is currently investigating crime and managing offenders and suspects” and “concerns about how the force is preventing and reducing crime and providing victims with an effective service”.
This Assembly also notes HM Inspector’s concerns regarding cultural issues within the service and with regret that the Met’s reform plan was not fully funded in 2024/25 because of budget pressures across the force.
This Assembly also wishes to recognise HM Inspector’s positive comments around the fair and proportionate use of stop and search and would like to thank Met officers for their hard work on delivering this across the capital.
This Assembly calls on the Mayor as London’s Police and Crime Commissioner to set out in detail how he intends to improve the Met’s performance in response to this assessment and restore Londoner’s confidence in their police service.
