Budgeting for building homes

The Mayor is responsible for overseeing a budget of over £20 billion.

The extent of the under delivery of new housing is clear, as London’s housing need has been identified by the new Government with 81,000 new homes needed every year from 2026. This compares with 35,305 built in 2022-23.1

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will question the Mayor’s housing leads on how the Mayor will fund building homes through his 2025-26 budget.

The Committee will also seek to understand the challenges and opportunities in relation to the proposed City Hall developer concept, which was recommended as part of the Kerslake review, and is referenced in the Mayor’s 2024 manifesto.
