English language skills are central to finding a job and progressing in work in the UK. This report focuses on migrants’ experiences of developing these skills while in low paid and low skilled work.
The report addresses some of the barriers and solutions identified through interviews with migrants in this type of work. In response to the research, three models were developed to help address English language learning needs for refugees and migrants in low-paid, low-skilled work in London.
The GLA is also working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and other agencies to improve the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision for Jobcentre Plus customers before they start work. Once in work, the opportunities to learn and practice English can be restricted, particularly in low paid and low skilled work.
