Summary of request
Your request
Sexual Harassment Campaigns on Transport for London (TfL) services:
- Do you have a map or any other similar resource that has compiled where exactly the posters have been displayed, for example, which stations and how many in each station?
- Are there an equal number of posters for each of the seven types of harassment were posted?
Your new Have a Word project:
- Have these posters replaced many of the previous sexual harassment campaign posters? Have you received any more backlash for this campaign versus the previous one?
- Do you have a layout of where these posters have been displayed?
If there is any other information that you would be willing to share about these
campaigns that is not already in the public domain I would also greatly appreciate it.
Our response
Thank for your interest in the campaigns that TfL and the Mayor of London are running to help prevent harassment and violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the capital.
There are two different campaigns and I can confirm that the GLA’s Have a Word
campaign does not replace TfL’s campaign about unwanted sexual behaviour and sexual harassment on London's public transport network. The GLA does not hold information that allows us to draw comparisons between the reactions to each (please see below).
The GLA does not hold a map or location data relating to TfL’s campaign posters. You
may wish to make a separate request to TfL using the address at the end of this letter.
The GLA does hold some information related to the GLA’s Have a Word Campaign on
TfL’s network that we received from TfL. A link is provided in the next section of this
response.
Further information and links:
The Have A Word campaign was developed in response to the insights that showed 76% of women say men in society don’t pull their weight in keeping women and girls safe and 68% of men and 79% of women agree that doing more to criticise their male friends for bad behaviour towards women would be somewhat effective (YouGov).
To address this issue and encourage men to reflect on the way we view, treat and talk about women, we placed the campaign in locations that ensured the highest and most impactful reach. The TfL inventory that showcases the Have A Word posters was assigned specifically for this VAWG campaign and was not allocated to replace any TfL campaign assets.
You can find a list of the stations with the VAWG campaign posters here. Please note, this list is accurate at time of sending.
As a public body, we are open and accountable to feedback, and encourage members of the public to voice any concerns about or support for our actions in equal measure.
The Have A Word campaign has generated a significant amount of interest, with individuals and organisations in the UK and overseas requesting to support and share the messaging. We do not hold any information to compare negative public responses with this campaign to the TfL campaign.
TfL is the Mayor's transport authority, and is responsible for implementing the Mayor's Transport Strategy, and for the day-to-day operational running of transport services in London. You may wish to send a further request to TfL about their campaign at [email protected]
