Firework display 2023/24
- Please advise the cost of this display. Please advise the revenue generated through ticket sales and any other revenue.
- How many contractors were invited to bid on putting on the event?
- Were they asked about any of the pollution effects of burning incendiary devices?
Was this a consideration? What gases or other noxious chemicals were put into the environment by having this display?
- What other costs resulted from the display e.g. barrier costs, police or emergency service attendance, clean-up costs
Our response
- The budget available for the event was £3.85m, with additional costs being supported by ticket revenue of £1.75m. The GLA does not hold the final costs for the 2023 event – these are still being reconciled.
- Procurement for the production partners on New Year’s Eve was carried out in 2022 in an open process with no limits set to the number of contractors who could bid. All bidders were required to address issues of sustainability within submissions.
- The London NYE 2023 display is held at an open venue, and the smoke and combustion by-products disperse rapidly in the majority of meteorological conditions.
Large firework displays are a rare occurrence, their impact is extremely short lived, localised and minimal.
Environment and sustainability are embedded in the procurement and contracting process for London’s New Year’s Eve event, with an environmental plan to manage key environmental impacts which the event management company consider throughout the planning and delivery process. These practices have meant that this year’s emissions from the display were reduced by 26% since 2016.
