Privacy policy for the London Assembly members
Who we are and what we do
The London Assembly holds the Mayor and Mayoral advisers to account by publicly examining policies, programmes and decisions through committee meetings, plenary sessions, site visits and investigations. 25 Assembly Members are elected by Londoners at the same time as the Mayor. Eleven represent the whole capital and 14 are elected by constituencies.
The Data Protection Officer (DPO) for the GLA, supports the London Assembly and its Assembly Members. Contact details for the GLA DPO can be found on our your privacy rights page.
Why we handle personal information
Under data protection legislation, the London Assembly is only allowed to use personal information if we have a proper reason (known as a 'legal basis') to do so.
The ‘legal basis’ relied on to process the personal data we hold will depend on the way in which you have engaged with the London Assembly. In most cases, however, our handling of your personal information will either be with your consent or is necessary for the delivery of our public functions. In other words, when we use your personal information, we do so to fulfil our statutory functions, to support and promote democratic engagement, and to ensure Assembly Members can represent the interests of their constituents.
The personal data we collect
When you contact us, visit us, access or use our services either online, by post, in person or by other means, we may collect, store and use your personal data. This includes:
- name, address, phone number, email address, other personal contact details
- photographs and images
- preferences, dietary or access requirements
- personal data that you share when you contact us by letter, email, phone or other means.
Most of the personal data we process is provided to us directly by Londoners because you have corresponded with the Assembly or taken part in its work e.g. submitting evidence to a Committee, making an enquiry, raising a casework query with an Assembly Member, responding to a Call for Evidence, signing up to an Assembly newsletter or attending an Assembly event.
Individual Assembly Members are the relevant data controller when handling personal data from residents of their constituency, or in the case of London-wide Members, the residents of Greater London, (e.g. handling personal data to take forward complaints made by local residents).
Additional information regarding the handling of such data can be found on individual Assembly Member pages.
How we use and protect your information
Your trust is very important to us, and we are strongly committed to keeping your personal data safe. We will take all necessary measures to ensure your personal information is properly protected and secured. This includes having appropriate technical and organisational arrangements to secure your information.
We will never send an unsolicited message to you to ask you to provide your password, financial details or other sensitive information by email or through a link. If you have any concerns about your personal data held by the London Assembly, please get in touch straight away.
