Strategic crime analysis

The Strategic Crime Analysis team provide a bespoke data and analysis service to the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

We identify trends and patterns of crime and disorder in London, and provide support in the development and use of crime hotspot intelligence.

What is strategic crime analysis?

We work alongside MOPAC (The Mayor's Office for Policing And Crime) , who provide oversight and scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police Service. We provide innovative data analysis, as well as advice on how to use and present this data.

We run the community safety data-sharing platform SafeStats. SafeStats helps police and crime prevention teams to tackle local issues by providing them with powerful analysis, including hotspot mapping.

We are also involved in some award-winning projects, such as the Ordnance Survey’s
Hot Blocking.

Our recent analysis products

The London Landscape - this is a data visualisation tool produced jointly by the GLA Intelligence Unit and Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime.

It collates crime, demographic and population data for over 100 indicators. It allows planners, particularly the MPS and those in community safety roles, to understand various areas of interest and adjust resources.

Information Sharing to Tackle Violence (ISTV) A new ISTV interface developed by the GLA is available for those involved in community safety, health and violence reduction. It brings together anonymised data on the location of assaults reported to London’s 28 A&E departments.

It is an easy-to-use interface that displays violent incidents from walk-in patients right down to the street location of the incident. The interface allows you to not only filter the data by various aspects, but also compare the days of the week, the hospital attended and type of injury of these incidents. The incidents can also be exported for your own analysis.

Access can be gained through the homepage accessed via the link above, with a walkthrough video of what can be done with the interface here

The Neighbourhood Confidence and Crime Comparator - this tool interactively visualises the quarterly findings from the Public Attitude Survey of the Metropolitan Police Service.

It allows users to consider these datasets across all London neighbourhoods, but also within similar groups of neighbourhoods. This is calculated through the profiling of a wide range of socio-economic and demographic indicators.

London Crime – A National Picture - this interactive dashboard allows users to view rolling 12 month ONS data for changes in crime for the Metropolitan Police Service. It also allows you to compare this data with the performance of England and Wales as a whole.

Also included are MPS rates and their percentage share for England and Wales, key performing boroughs, and data from the previous update.
