London's grassroots music scene is where great talent starts out. Grassroots venues and up-and-coming musicians are behind the capital's success as a global music city. But a 35% drop in the number of venues since 2007 has cut opportunities for new and emerging talent.

The Rescue Plan for London’s Grassroots Music Venues recommended creating a campaign to promote grassroots music venues and their incredible music heritage.

Sounds Like London

In June 2018, the Mayor launched Sounds Like London, a brand new campaign to support the capital's grassroots music scene. Sounds Like London encouraged people to visit their local grassroots music venue and support emerging talent.

The campaign featured a month of over 250 gigs, panels and special events. Key partners included Boiler Room, AirBnB, Apple, BBC Music Introducing, Universal, Music Venue Trust, fabric, Point Blank Music School, PRS for Music and PRS Foundation.

As part of the Mayor's #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign, there was a strong focus on women in music. 80% of artists included in the programme were women. A number of high profile musicians also supported the campaign as ambassadors, including KT Tunstall, DJ Storm and Vanessa White.
