A series of Growth Corridor place-focused sessions were organised as part of the London Plan team’s extensive Planning for London consultation programme. This was an opportunity to talk about opportunities and challenges in the corridor and identify ways that growth could be supported moving forward.

Context

Within our ongoing programme on Opportunity Area (OA) Monitoring, we took a closer look at five growth Corridors, identified in the London Plan, and the Mayor’s Transport Strategy:

  • Elizabeth Line
  • Bakerloo Line Extension
  • Thames Estuary
  • West London Orbital
  • Upper Lea Valley.

We collected a series of development, socio-economic, and environmental data, looking beyond OA boundaries, assessing local change at a strategic scale, and considering the impact of transport and connectivity on development.

The analysis and workshops covered the following topics:

  • Residential development throughout the years; trends and observations
  • Economic sectors that are thriving, or are under pressure, including industrial land, creative industries and innovation clusters
  • Planning frameworks and spatial strategies
  • Green infrastructure provision and access
  • Deprivation
  • Spatial opportunities and challenges in the corridor, including physical severance
