Charitable Donation to Southwark Cathedral

To make a charitable donation to Southwark Cathedral in recognition of the support provided to the Metropolitan Police Service and the impact on the work of the Cathedral during the terrorist incidents of the summer 2017.

Request to the DMPC to:

Agree to make a charitable donation to Southwark Cathedral of up to £12,000 for their support and engagement with the Metropolitan Police Service in response to the terrorist incidents during the summer 2017.

1. Introduction and background

1.1 This request relates to the terrorist incidents of Summer 2017 and the support provided by Southwark Cathedral to the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

1.2 It is felt appropriate to make a small charitable donation to the Cathedral to recognize the support they have given to the MPS.

2. Issues for consideration

2.1. Specifically, the terrorist incident at London Bridge had a direct impact on the Cathedral and its work. The MPS recognizes the work of the Cathedral and the support it provided to officers and staff.

3. Financial Comments

3.1. Funding for this donation, if supported, would come from the MOPAC Police Property Act Fund (PPAF).

4. Legal Comments

4.1. MOPAC has the power under paragraph 6(4)(c) of the Police (Property) Regulations 1997 to permit the “payments of such amounts as the relevant authority may determine for such charitable purposes as they select”. The Cathedral is a registered charity.
