Trees for London
In July 2022, The Mayor announced Trees for London, a £3.1million tree planting package. Trees for London is part of the Mayor’s programme to plant thousands of new trees over the next two years. Planting more trees in London will help cool the city and provide welcome shade. It will also help protect London from flooding. Tree planting is part of the Mayor’s mission to make London a greener, more liveable city, where everyone has access to healthy outdoor space.
Get involved
In 2022/23 the Mayor gave away over 40,000 trees to Londoners through free tree planter packs for local green spaces, housing estates and playgrounds with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) I Dig Trees.
Applications are open for 2023-24. You can order free trees for your local public green space on the TCV website.
Sponsor a new street tree with Trees for Streets.
The Mayor is funding 1000 new trees in priority areas across the city. For every tree sponsored by a resident or local business in a participating borough, the Mayor will sponsor one further tree.
In November and December 2022 we worked with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) to giveaway 1000 free Rowan trees to Londoners from two TCV sites: Stave Hill in Rotherhithe or Railway Fields in Haringey.
We will be working with TCV again this year to give away free trees at TCV sites, including at Stave Hill on 29th November to celebrate National Tree Week. For more information on times and other tree giveaways watch this space.
The 2022 Grow Back Greener Fund will support London's communities to plant trees to provide shade, create and enhance green space and increase climate resilience.
Rounds one and two of the Grow Back Greener Fund have already supported London’s communities and grassroots organisations to deliver almost 80 projects that make a real difference to their local environment and people’s wellbeing.
Applications are now closed for this round of the Grow Back Greener Fund.
Through the Green and Resilient Spaces Fund Round 2, tree planting grants of between £75,000 and £500,000 were available for large scale tree planting and woodland creation sites over two planting seasons, by March 2025.
Three projects received grant funding for tree planting. These projects offer exemplar tree planting and woodland creation projects for climate resilience and will result in more than 50,000 new trees over the two years of the programme.
