About Green Roots
The Green Roots programme aims to help nature thrive in the city by giving London communities active ways to transform their local spaces.
It focuses on making the environment better for all Londoners, while addressing issues such as inequality, biodiversity loss and climate resilience.
The Green Roots Fund is one part of the programme. Through it, we're funding projects in London that improve its:
- green spaces – including parks, trees and community gardens.
- blue spaces – including wetlands, rivers and sustainable drainage.
Over £12m of funding is available over three years. Local authorities and not-for-profit organisations can apply for a grant of £10,000 to £500,000.
Access to nature is a social justice issue. We see many parts of London where people do not have access to good quality green and blue spaces. The Green Roots Fund aims to change that by funding projects that will reconnect Londoners to their local spaces and bring nature back into the city for all to enjoy.
What this fund supports
The Green Roots Fund is open to all projects involving green and blue spaces and for public benefit across the capital. The funding seeks to support projects that:
- Enhance blue and green spaces in London. This means making London’s neighbourhoods healthier, more nature-rich and climate resilient, so they are higher quality and natural spaces are better connected to each other.
- Include and involve Londoners in blue and green spaces. This means ensuring access to green and blue infrastructure and its benefits for all Londoners, so they feel welcome and comfortable in green and blue spaces. It also means involving diverse groups in management and decision making.
We're looking to fund various types of projects in two categories: implementation and enabling work.
Implementation work focuses on activities that happen in a place to improve the physical space. For example:
- creation, improvement and restoration of green space, waterways, wetlands or other habitats
- rewilding
- tree planting
- species reintroduction
- climate adaptation measures, such as flood prevention and urban cooling.
Enabling work focuses on supporting activities like research, design, community engagement and more. Some examples include:
- community science
- community activation, outreach and education
- community micro-grant schemes
- feasibility studies
- baseline surveys
- design work.
