Success story: Newham University Hospital
Now a part of Barts NHS Trust, the 379 bed hospital in East London has invested in a variety of energy and environmental improvements. This has included two phased installations under the RE:FIT Framework – reducing Newham University Hospital’s carbon emissions and enhancing the healing environment of its patients through better air quality.

How the Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces supported Newham University Hospital?
One of the first public sector organisations to use the Mayor of London’s Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces, the Hospital gained support across two phases. The initial phase focused on the replacement and upgrade of air handling units, with heat recovery and improved control in the main hospital itself.
The success of this phase was recognised through awards at the Building Better Healthcare Awards and Environmental Best practice medal, for ‘Best Use of Innovative Funding’ and ‘International Green Apple’ respectively.
The second phase continued the upgrade of air handling units in the main hospital, but also extended them to the pathology laboratory.
Impact
Newham University Hospital has taken advantage of Retrofit Accelerator’s guaranteed energy and CO2 reductions, and has reduced its carbon footprint by 2,130 tonnes of CO2 across four years – equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of almost 570 average-sized homes.

Client testimonial
I chose to use the RE:FIT Framework because it was tried and tested, OJEU compliant and easy to access. It has shown the benefits, support and savings that can be achieved as a programme and also allowed the best solutions to be taken up by the organisation.
