Success story: London School of Economics
The London School of Economics (LSE) is the world’s leading centre for social sciences. Its carbon management plan set a carbon reduction of 54% by 2020 against 2005 levels, and the Retrofit Accelerator was a key partner in delivering the plan. With the Retrofit Accelerator team’s support, LSE has installed a range of energy conservation measures across campus in the first phase of an energy efficiency programme.

How the Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces supported LSE?
The Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces supported LSE in installing a range of energy conservation measures across campus in the first phase of an energy efficiency programme.
This included the installation of lighting replacements and lighting control systems, as well as providing optimisation and control strategy improvements for BMS.
The team also provided support in solar PV installation and a boiler replacement scheme that added an efficient economiser to gain stable temperatures within rooms.
Impact
Ongoing monitoring has proved actual energy savings significantly exceeded the savings targeted at the design stage with gas consumption down by 30 per cent in phase one.
Additional measures adopted in the second phase of the programme have resulted in annual CO2 emissions being reduced by a further 304 tonnes.
By taking advantage of Retrofit Accelerator’s guaranteed energy and CO2 reductions, LSE has reduced its carbon footprint by 1,783 tonnes of CO2 in the first year of its energy efficiency programme. This is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of about 475 averaged-sized homes.

Client testimonial
Retrofitting our buildings is critical for hitting our carbon reduction targets, but it’s a struggle to systematically deliver improvements. The Retrofit Accelerator has been a brilliant solution for us. It’s enabled my team to overcome our barriers to delivery and get savings moving and we’re looking forward to our next Retrofit Accelerator phase.
