Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute trust in England operating from two hospitals.
The trust has implemented an Energy Performance Contract through Retrofit Accelerator - Workplaces (RA-W), identifying guaranteed energy savings of around £1m annually.
In addition, through the replacement of life expired equipment, £10m will be offset from backlog maintenance.

How the Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces supported Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust
The Retrofit Accelerator – Workplaces supported Epsom and St Helier in procuring and installing a variety of energy reduction measures through the RE:FIT Framework, including combined heat and power systems, LED lighting retrofit and pipework insulation.
The RA-W Programme Delivery Unit also provided support in Building Management System optimisation, HVAC replacement and external fabric upgrade at St Helier Hospital.
Impact
In taking advantage of Retrofit Accelerators’ guaranteed energy and CO2 reductions, Epsom and St Hellier reduced its carbon footprint by 5,000 tonnes of CO2 across the first year of the project – equivalent to the annual carbon emissions from about 1,300 averaged-size homes.
Savings resulting from the completed works were guaranteed under the RE:FIT Framework, providing an example of a very strong ‘invest to save’ business case.
