Pelham Primary School
Raising all children’s achievement/progress in Reading/Writing/Maths
What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Historically low achieving, low aspirational groups of vulnerable children including Pupil Premium, white working class boys EAL, and SEN. There was also a lack of parental support.
What actions did you take?
• Half-termly Pupil Progress Meetings. Scrutinised data for every child in R/W/M – (2 year group teachers & SLT (Executive Head, Head of School, Assistant Head))
•Teacher identified gaps for interventions - R/W/M (Pupil Premium Funding). Managed by Inclusion Manager and SENCO
• Focused arithmetic/mental maths strategies
• Mentored individuals around their behaviour/attitudes to learning
• Mentored individuals around their writing (Exec HT)
• Shared constructive dialogue for work scrutiny/book monitoring (SLT/ teachers)
• Daily reading checks on home reading for all pupils
• Encouraged more challenging books
• Aspirations Day. Range of jobs represented. Showed links to reading/writing/maths learning and real jobs/careers
• Workshops for parents.
What were the outcomes?
Improvement in progress and achievement in all year groups. Improved positive attitudes towards learning; rise in self-esteem and confidence.
